Single use plastics are put in our hands every week from plastic water bottles , plastic wear with our to go food in a plastic bag, plastic straws , plastic lids, etc.

Many of the plastics that end up in our oceans and water ways can be reduced . What are you doing to reduce using single use plastics?

Currently this hs been a focus of mine personally over the last several months. Simply brining my awareness to JUST HOW MUCH single use plastic I was using. Holy smokes! I purchased a glass straw to replace plastic ones. Now if I can only keep track of it everyday. I now do my best (some days are epic fails) to bring my mason jars with me for my smoothie if I don’t make it at home. I also look for products that are made with post-consumer recylced containers. It is a start. Next thing I am looking for are wooden utensils for on-the-go. My busy schedule often means eating on the go and can be a huge source of single use plastics. Working towards eliminating these first.

    Alyson,
Did you know that Bureo is making bamboo utensils? They are beautiful and come in their own self- enclosed pack so you can leave them in your glove box until needed. Check it out:

I try my best to remember to bring my reusable grocery bags when I do shop. When I do use water bottles I refill them over and over as many times that I can.

It really is shocking once you sit down and take inventory of all the single-use plastic you use in a day, Evelyn! Some things like straws, forks/spoons/knives, etc. that come with to-go orders even get discarded without being used.

Love that there are companies like Aardvark Paper Straws who are offering alternatives…

I think it is great that some races and events are encouraging paddlers to bring their own water bottle and providing filling stations instead of handing out cases of single use plastic water bottles.
We should encourage these events to keep up the good work and also use them as examples for other events to follow. Sponsors can provide branded water bottles in the goodie bags and then everyone has a container and the sponsors get lots of logos out being used!
