Pau Hana Pro Tip: How To Properly Install Your SUP Fin

Todd from Pau Hana Surf Supply teaches us how to install a fin on a standup paddleboard.

There are only 3 pieces to install your fin:

  1. Fin (Obviously?)
  2. A square washer
  3. A screw

First:

Insert the square washer into the track at the bottom of the fin box while making sure to keep ahold of and use the screw to slide  it toward the front of the board.

Second:

Find the dowel of the fin (on most fins there will be a metal dowel that sticks out slightly from the fin) and insert it into the widest opening of the fin box and slide it on the track toward the back of the board.

Make sure the fin is facing the proper direction.

Third:

Line up the hole in in the fin with the square washer and drop your screw in.  You may need to wiggle it around a little to get the threads lined up.  Next just screw it in, but make sure not to over tighten it!

PS. Here is a bonus tip from Todd:

A lot of times you may need to transport your sup without your fin on for safety.  This presents a problem because the washer and screw is so small people end up losing them all the time!  You can’t just find these at the local hardware store in most cases.

What you can do to avoid that all together is take the screw out and remove the fin, but instead of taking out the square washer

What you can do to avoid that all together is take the screw out and remove the fin, but instead of taking out the square washer, you simply put the screw back in and screw it down until you feel it touch.  Make sure it’s not going to move around and you will have it safe and secure in the board for your next sup session!
