Paddle Into Fitness Newsletter: May 2012

Greetings!

Happy June, friends! Here at Paddle Into Fitness, we have more than a few reasons to smile. For starters, there are still two weeks left until the longest day of the year (June 20) which means longer days, later sunsets and plenty of time tolive, laugh and paddle our hearts out.

Global Partner

Our founder, Gillian Gibree just returned from Vail, Colorado where she went to compete in the TEVA Mountain Games. Unfortunately, the SUP events were called off due to low water levels, but she still got to do a fun mud run with the other pro SUP girls, paddle down the Colorado River, fish off of her board and SUP on white water for the first time. Here trip to Vail proved that there are so many different ways to enjoy this awesome sport!

Another reason to celebrate is that next month, thousands of enthusiastic yogis are descending upon our beautiful city for the first annual Yoga Journal Conferencein San Diego! Mandy, Kathryn and Gillian will be leading SUP Yoga clinics on July 14 and 15 – see below for more details and a special coupon code.

Our SUP Yoga Teacher Training certification in August is filling up fast! We only have 7 spots left, so if you are a yoga teacher (or experienced yogi) and want to spend 4 glorious days on the water with us learning to teach our PIF signature classes, apply here today!

On August 25th, Gillian will be participating in the Cape Cod Bay Challenge – a 36 mile Stand Up Paddle Crossing from Plymouth to Wellfleet, Massachusetts. Last year Gillian had an amazing experience with a passionate group of paddlers who helped raise over $100,000 for Christopher’s Haven, a non-profit organization that provides housing for families who bring their child to Boston’s Mass General Hospital for cancer treatment. Click here to support Gillian and the great work done at Christopher’s Haven!

We hope to see you at one of our many exciting events this summer. In the meantime, enjoy this video showing how to work into more challenging poses like Side Plank, Wild Thing and one-legged Wheel Pose on a paddleboard!

Instructor Highlight: Laura

1) Name, Age, Hometown:  Laura Thornton. Age = old, but if you must include my age (ha-ha), it’s almost 49, from Southern California. Been paddling for 4 years.

2) What physical/mental changes have you noticed since including SUP in your life?  Mental = Every day on the water is a good day.  How lucky am I to be able to teach others (which I love) while paddling around the beautiful harbor. Physically it helps with core strength and upper body strength. If I’m teaching fitness, it’s a great whole body workout.

3) When and where do you teach? I teach Beginner SUP on Tuesdays at 5pm and Saturdays at 8am. I teach SUP Fitness on Saturdays at 10am, all out of the OEX Sunset Beach/Huntington Harbor location.

4) What do you like most about teaching SUP? (1) When I have a student who is afraid to fall in the water/afraid they won’t be able to do it, and discover they can, and then watching them progress from wobbly at the beginning of class to proficient by the end. (2) When they tell me how much fun it was and they are so glad they tried it, and (3) When I have students who are athletic and I can teach them more advanced paddle techniques. For my Fitness classes, I love when students try the things they do on land and discover they can do it on a board too!  So much better than doing it inside 4 walls! I also really enjoy the physical workout I get while teaching.

5) What is your favorite post-SUP snack?

Vitamin Water and some turkey or chicken with quinoa.
