Jimmy Buffet gives ‘Fins Up’ for Crossing for a Cure

Global Partner

Did you know that Mr. Parrothead himself, Jimmy Buffett, is Advisor to the Board for the 80-mile paddle to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis families:  Crossing for a Cure?  He’s a passionate man and holds a huge heart in that legendary chest. Here is Jimmy’s brief message to paddlers undertaking the passage from Bimini to the Florida coast on June 15th.

Jimmy Buffett is on board for Crossing for a Cure

Legendary music icon Jimmy Buffett agrees to serve as Advisor to the Board of the Crossing For A Cure & Piper’s Angels Foundation. Jimmy says his philanthropic efforts closely aligned with those of Piper’s Angels Foundation.

Piper’s Angels Foundation announced that rock icon Jimmy Buffett will serve as Advisor to the Board for the 2019 Crossing For A Cure event. This stand up paddle, prone, surfski, kayak and rowboat 80-mile endurance paddle crosses from the Bahamas to Florida to raise money for the cystic fibrosis community.

This year, the crossing will take place on Saturday June 15th for Father’s Day weekend. Buffett, an avid stand up paddler himself, also acts as an ocean enthusiast.  He is an advocate and donor for many ocean-based causes and charitable events, making him an ideal candidate to be involved with the Pipers Angels Foundation and Crossing for a Cure. He understands the power of ocean-based activities. And, he celebrates the healing power of the ocean for cystic fibrosis patients who rely on the proven health benefits of salt water.

“I just wanted to get involved in the simple fact that we come from the ocean and we need to do everything we can to make sure the ocean is sustainable.” – Jimmy BuFFETT

Buffett Advisor to the Board: 2019 Crossing for a Cure

Jimmy Buffett’s relationship with Piper’s Angels Foundation founder Travis Suit results from a chance encounter four years ago. The two met on the sand of Palm Beach where Buffett expressed enthusiasm for the ocean-based initiatives Suit spearheads.

Piper’s Angels Foundation embraces the healing effects of salt air to enhance the quality of life for cystic fibrosis patients. Crossing For A Cure, supports the Foundation’s Salt Supply and Forever Stoke programs, which encourages children and adults battling cystic fibrosis to participate in ocean-based activities. The Foundation facilitates their opportunities to have access to ocean water and salt laden air.

“It’s an absolute honor to have Jimmy Buffett as an Advisor to the Board for the Crossing For A Cure and Piper’s Angels Foundation,” said founder/CEO Travis Suit.

“I can’t imagine a more ideal person to be involved with this event and organization, considering his alignment with our purpose and mission.”  – Travis Suit

Evelyn O’Doherty
Evelyn O'Doherty, owner & publisher of the new Standup Journal 2.0, worked her way up the ranks in the world of stand up paddling. A former surfer gone rogue, Evelyn stepped onto a SUP for the first time in 2009 when a plaguing neck injury kept her out of the water from surfing. Discovering the core benefits and expanded perspective on the water that stand up paddling brings, Ev immediately was hooked. She became a strong SUP racer in the North East and a year-round SUP surfer, gathering multiple top brand sponsorships including becoming a team rider for Starboard SUP and a national ambassador for Kialoa, as well as celebrating all aspects of the sport with additional brand ambassadorships including lululemon athletica, Clif Bar, Cobian, Kaenon & Indo Board. Her love of watersports and commitment to advocacy in preserving our marine environments led to a short film made with The Nature Conservancy as part of their Clean Water initiatives on Long Island, NY, called "A New Perspective". Evelyn just keeps paddling. Today, she's stepped up to take over the helm at Standup Journal after having worked for the magazine for 2 years as senior online editor. Her dedication and belief in the power of print to immerse readers in the watersports they love even if they don't have access to the water in a daily existence plus a powerful desire to spotlight the amazing people doing rad sh*t on the water is what drives her vision for Standup Journal 2.0. Evelyn welcomes the conversation about how to make the magazine benefit as many people as possible and encourages feedback, letters to the editor and communication at editor@standupjournal.com . Now, as owner/publisher for Standup Journal., Evelyn continues to live in East Hampton NY where she has daily access to the water. When the swell is working, you can find her in Montauk rattling around in her Ford Ranger surfboards hanging out the back headed for points East.
