Pro Standup Paddling Tips With Sean Poynter

How to get in the water with your board and paddle the easiest way possible

When you are walking your board out of the shallows and into deeper water, you want to make sure the nose of the board is facing directly into the waves and you are standing to the side of the board.

What you don’t want to do is put you board sideways or come in between the wave and the board. The wave may end up smashing your board into you and potentially causing serious injury depending on the size of the swell and conditions.

Next you want to make sure your paddle is lying lengthways on the standup paddleboard with the blade toward the rear.

You will want to guide the board over the breaking waves with your stronger arm toward the rear and your other arm guiding the board over the top of the waves. You will do this by applying pressure to the tail so the nose can easily pop over the incoming wave.

Tip: You will want to have your hand facing sideways. If you are ever in a position where your hand is facing forward on the board while pushing it, you are probably aligning your body with the board in front of you, which may cause the board to crash into you when the wave hits.
