STAND Film Is Now Available On Netflix

stand_presskit_webres_3VANCOUVER, BC (March 12, 2014) – STAND, the award winning environmental surf documentary highlighting the beauty as well as the threats facing British Columbia’s pristine west coast is now available on After premiering in Vancouver in May 2013 and screening at numerous surf, adventure and conservation film festivals around the world, it is now possible to stream the film online. With a slew of awards including Best Film at the 2013 SUP Awards and touring the globe in over 30 countries on the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour, STAND is creating awareness of the proposed Northern Gateway pipeline and proposed tanker route.

“The response to the film from audiences both near and far to the ocean has been positive with many lively conversations started about how to visit the Great Bear Rainforest or Haida Gwaii, or how to help protect these areas,” says director Anthony Bonello. “We are really excited to now be able to share the film on the worlds leading streaming platform, Netflix.”

stand_presskit_webres_2The film follows expedition paddleboarder Norm Hann on a 350km journey down the east coast of Haida Gwaii, directly adjacent to the proposed Northern Gateway tanker route. Hann gives voice to the fears and concerns of the Haida people, along with those of the Gitga’at living in the heart of the Great Bear Rainforest and a class of grade 11 Heiltsuk students from Bella Bella. These students craft their very own paddle boards from local red and yellow cedar and articulate the engagement of youth on this highly controversial issue. Iconic West coast surfer, Raph Bruhwiler shares his connection to the west coast through his powerful surfing and reliance on the ocean for food and inspiration.

“One part surf, one part nature, and one part environmental documentary, STAND doesn’t fit into a traditional category of film,” says Hann. “We wanted people to feel like they are truly experiencing this special place that is, in fact, quite difficult to access yet highly threatened.”

stand_presskit_webres_1Co-director Nicolas Teichrob explains of the decision to release the film on Netflix. “We wanted to consider our options and find a platform that would help diversify the demographic of people that might watch the film. Netflix is that platform and will making the film available across North America with a regular subscription.”

Netflix is the world’s leading Internet television network with over 44 million members in more than 40 countries enjoying more than one billion hours of TV shows and movies per month. With a monthly subscription, Netflix members can watch as much as they want, anytime, anywhere, on nearly any Internet-connected screen.
