APP World Tour athletes to meet at eight locations across the globe

For the first time under one heading, the Stand Up World Series and Stand Up World Tour paddlesurf competitions will be gathered into one event.  The 2017 APP World Tour is scheduled to run from February through December of 2017. Under the APP heading, the Tour will hold elite competitions at eight iconic surf and stand up paddle race locations across the globe.  On the docket are Tokoyo (Japan), Hainan (China), Canary Islands (Spain), Scharbeutz (Germany) and Hawaii (United States).

No longer an open competition

Breaking from it’s tradition to hold open competitions for the two disciplines of standup paddle racing and sup surfing, the APP this year has closed the roster for the World Tour.  For the first time, the Tour is mixing in several wild cards and inviting the top standup paddle athletes in the world to come compete for the title.

32 men and 12 women for racing; and 36 men and 18 women for surfing from over 20 countries will take the stage for the 2017 APP World Tour

Who Will Take the Crown?

Standup paddle racing makes up the bulk of the Tour and hosts a dynamic array of competitors in the line up,.  Athletes including Kai Lenny, Kenny Kaneko and Casper Steinfath are on the roster to make a run at dethroning reigning champ Conor Baxter from the coveted no. 1 position.

Competing for the women is another list of dynamic paddlers including young guns Izzy Gomez, Fiona Wylde and Shakira Westdorp alongside veteran champions Sonni Honscheid and crowned queen Candice Appleby.

The women’s elite racers will have a fierce line up going in to 2017 as the young guns look to unseat the top seeds from last year.

A Memorial for Sophia

As the APP announces their athletes, there is one shining star not on the list.  That is the empty space left by the recent passing of 25-year-old Sophia Tiare Bartlow who was scheduled to compete in both the racing and sup surf divisions.  A larger than life character and an undeniable talent, Sophia was one of the most well-rounded waterwomen of her generation.  She will be sorely missed.

In a memorial tribute, the APP Tour will hold a paddle out for Sophia before the start of the Sunset Beach Pro in Oahu Hawaii on Friday, Feb. 10th @ 10AM.  All are welcome to join in and celebrate the life of this dynamic young talent.
